The next morning. The mood in the bedroom is agreeable. The window is ajar and a smell of freshness fills the air. The smell of snow. The roller blind has been raised and outside the chestnut tree stands thick and white. The sound of the snow plow drifts up from the street. In the light of the street lamp he can see the snow is still coming down.

Apart from that light, everything is as yet dark. Simon stands at the window in his pajamas, one hand still holding the cord of the blind. Hearing her stir, he turns around.

“Good morning,” he says. “Have you slept all right?”

They smile at each other.

“What time is it?” she asks.

“Six,” he says.

When they went to bed they were still angry with each other. They never talk about their disagreements.

But now they’ve woken up to snow, to a new day, new hope.

“What would you say,” he says, “to a little getaway? A weekend together, just the two of us?”

“Yes,” she says.

“I’ve checked the weather forecast,” he says. “It says snow, and then more snow.”

He turns to face the window again. Seeing him standing there fills her with tenderness.

“Come here,” she says.

“Let’s have some breakfast,” he says.

She gets out of bed and puts a dressing gown on, then goes downstairs to fetch the paper. They light candles and make coffee, and sit down opposite each other at the table. It’s as if they inhabit a state of calm, which is the truth itself, and which nothing can destroy.
